On 16 December, the European Commission held its annual Erasmus+ Sport Info Day in Brussels, Belgium. Gathering around 200 participants in person and many more online, the event represented a key platform for sharing the new EU priorities and opportunities, as well as a great opportunity for exchanging and networking with like-minded organisations in view to collaborate.

TAFISA was well represented, with Denis Karakasis (TAFISA Vice President - Europe; Greece Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, Culture & Sports), Jacqueline Kronenburg (TAFISA Board Member; Knowledge Centre for Sport and Physical Activity Netherlands) and Gaëtan Garcia (TAFISA Head of Operations) who attended the event and brought forward some ideas and comments on further improving the Erasmus+ program.

Following an introduction to the Erasmus+ Sport program's changes in 2025 and insights from previous years, the event featured a speech by Glenn Micallef, European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture, and Sport. In his address, Commissioner Micallef shared his thoughts and priorities for the next 5 years, stressing that "Sport is an essential public good. Sport is a European good."

The event then transitioned into various sessions covering Erasmus+ Sport policy priorities, as well as the Erasmus+ Sport program opportunities and application process. The event concluded with an interactive session whereby participants could share feedback on how to enhance the Erasmus+ Sport program in the future.

The Erasmus+ Sport program constitutes a critical resource for the development and implementation of impactful initiatives in Europe, enabling organisations across the continent to innovate and run projects using the power of Sport for All and physical activity to create a better world.

BACKGROUND

Known as Erasmus+ since 2014, when it enlarged its original scope of activities, this emblematic programme is ranked by Europeans as the EU's third most positive result, just after free movement and peace. Erasmus+ is the EU's programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. The Erasmus+ programme has supported 14 million people in various education, training, youth and sport mobility activities. In 2024, Erasmus+ continues to expand, bringing positive change to diverse sectors and landscapes. It will continue to offer transnational experiences to school pupils, higher education and vocational education and training students, as well as opportunities to adult learners, educators and staff, and young people in non-formal learning programmes.
