From broadcast headlines to viral posts, the way sport is portrayed matters. But what story are we telling, and which stories are left out? Too often, inclusive events and underrepresented voices are sidelined or overlooked entirely, receiving only a fraction of the attention given to mainstream competitions.

Also, there is an increasing public demand for more ethical, inclusive, relatable, and representative reporting from media outlets. In this evolving media ecosystem, journalists and content creators are called upon not only to inform but to advocate, raise awareness, and shape public perceptions and policy debates around inclusion, diversity, and equity in sport. This can only be achieved by enhancing the dissemination and promotion of the projects, events, and actions that promote social inclusion, diversity, and equal opportunities through sport. According to the IOC Portrayal guidelines, balanced portrayal practices should reflect the diversity that exists both within and between different groups. After all, sportspeople come from a wide range of backgrounds, they don't all look, speak, or experience the world the same way.

Beyond the scores and headlines, the way stories are framed, who is highlighted, whose voices are amplified, and which narratives are prioritized can deeply influence public perception. The media holds the power to reinforce stereotypes or challenge them. It can widen the gap or help inform people of better practices. Selective visibility narrows the public’s understanding of sport’s potential as a driver for inclusion and reinforces the exclusion of those already on the margins. What stories are being left untold? How can reporting provide deeper, more nuanced portrayals of underrepresented initiatives and events?

This webinar will explore how inclusive stories benefit both sport ecosystems and media credibility, what can be done to communicate more and better, why it is relevant for proper practices that foster inclusion to be adapted, and how this can be done.
