On Thursday 3 February, the Made to Play Coaching Girls Guide global workshop series was kicked off in style with its first event co-organised by TAFISA and Nike Made to Play, and in partnership with the Saudi Sports for All Federation. As part of TAFISA’s ongoing partnership with Nike Made to Play, the workshop series has been designed to increase and enhance opportunities for girls and women to undertake sport and physical activity as well as highlight the necessity of equal representation at all levels.

Over the next six months, the global series will host workshops across the world – from Saudi Arabia to Fiji, the Caribbean, Botswana and Slovenia – inviting sport coaches, leaders, and managers to discover the Made to Play Coaching Girls Guide and learn how to successfully recruit and retain girls in sport. In order to reach out to different networks, each workshop will be hosted in collaboration with an on-the-ground partner that shares the same values as TAFISA and Nike Made to Play regarding closing the gender gap and making sport more accessible for girls and women. The objectives of the series are as follows:

  • Empower girls and women through the training and educating of coaches, sport leaders, and managers.
  • Improve the quality of sport coaching offered to girls and women and encourage girls and women to train as sport coaches.
  • Increase the number of (1) girls who are physically active, (2) women who are trained coaches, and (3) women leaders across the Global Sport for All Movement.

The inaugural workshop was specially tailored to celebrate World Hijab Day – held on 1 February – by incorporating an introduction of the Made to Play Hijab Product Playbook. Held in partnership with the Saudi Sports for All Federation, the kick-off workshop was attended by 41 participants who learnt from interventions from three stellar speakers and shared their own experiences. After opening words from Ms Catherine Forde – TAFISA Vice President for the Americas – and Ms Shaima AlHusseini – Managing Director for Saudi Sports for All Federation, Ms AlHusseini presented on the ‘State of Play in Saudi Arabia’. This was followed by an open floor discussion which saw participants exchange on their successes and challenges in developing and hosting sport programmes and activities for girls. Next up Ms Viv Holt – Head of International Operations for Youth Sport Trust International – presented the Made to Play Coaching Girls Guide and Ms Houda Loukili – Sports Coach and Consultant – presented the Made to Play Hijab Product Playbook.

TAFISA wishes to thank Nike Made to Play and Saudi Sports for All Federation for their contribution to the success of the workshop and a special thanks also goes to the participants.
